Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Resources

Disability significantly impacts our Aboriginal Communities and is often overlooked or misunderstood. Statistics reveal that among Indigenous Australians, 24% (139,700 people) were living with a disability in 2018, with 8.8% (51,100) experiencing severe or profound disability (ABS 2021).

Notably, Aboriginal people are twice as likely as non-Aboriginal people to have a severe or profound disability. As of 30 September 2022, the NDIS was providing disability support to 40,842 First Nations participants, marking an increase of over 18% from the previous year, highlighting the growing need for inclusive and culturally sensitive services.

Nioka Solutions has complied the following Aboriginal NDIS Resource links, to support Indigenous Australians with disabilities in building their capacity to navigate their NDIS services. They include a variety of templates, documents, and resources essential in Indigenous Australian NDIS service delivery.

Links To Helpful NDIS Resources

These NDIS resources have been designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability.

They were developed by an Aboriginal-owned company in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability and NDIS workers. They include designs by an Aboriginal artist and images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability. The resources explain your rights, how to choose quality and safe supports, and how to make a complaint to NDIS.

Nioka Solutions acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.
